School Direct: Initial Teacher Training Programmes (ITT)
School Direct is a new route into teacher training. School Direct is a training programme where outstanding schools recruit trainees directly to train and work within their alliance. Schools therefore have more control over the quality of training that is provided and how it is delivered. The course enables trainees to fully experience and be involved in day to day school life throughout the school year, not simply on designated teaching placements. In addition many SD programmes are tailored to the individual needs of participants. Each Alliance works in partnership with an accredited provider, making use of the wide range of high quality University partners in the West Midlands. All programmes award Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and most provide masters credits as part of a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
The aim is to provide excellent training and development, involving support and challenge in a honest and caring context with people who really care about you as an individual and will do everything possible to help you to succeed.
These strong, nurturing networks can give you individual support and in return for all your hard work and dedication you will have all the skills and confidence to be ready for your first NQT position. A high percentage of School Direct trainees go on to be employed in the schools that have supported their training, providing a seamless route from training to employment. As School Direct develops further, Teaching School Alliances are developing further programmes to support graduates in their NQT year and on into leadership.
You can now apply to become a teacher through any of the Sandwell Teaching School Alliances.
The best people to teach teachers are teachers. School-led systems put schools, school leaders and teachers firmly in the driving seat.
